I’ve been banging the drum about the need for a federal anti-SLAPP law for a long time now, and one has just been proposed. Call your Congresspeople: act.eff.org/action/protect-fre

act.eff.orgProtect Free Speech From Harassing LawsuitsDeep-pocketed individuals and corporations have been turning to civil lawsuits to silence their opponents. These Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, or SLAPPs, aren’t designed to win on the merits, but rather to harass journalists, activists, and consumers into silence by suing them over their protected speech. Now there’s a bill in Congress that will allow speakers targeted by SLAPPs to fight back, by getting the lawsuits quickly thrown out of federal court, and allow for SLAPP victims to get their legal fees back. The Free Speech Protection Act, H.R. 10310, sponsored by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA), will protect people from getting sued just for exercising their constitutional rights.

Anti-SLAPP doesn't benefit the rich or businesses, it won't pass.

EDIT: Not to say one shouldn't try but I refuse to get my hopes up when the only consistent thing about congress is their lack of passing meaningful legislation that benefits those without wealth or status.

Maybe I'm jaded but it seems like anything that isn't specifically a priority of the GOP or the ultra wealthy has zero chance of happening. I literally just watched the democrats ignore poisoned pills in the spending bill because fighting for trans kids wasn't worth it to them. I doubt any of them are personally affected by SLAPP suits, and the GOP absolutely won't pass a thing that people like Musk and any number of other CEOs utilize to squelch people. I question if the dems have any level of capacity to do the right thing because it's right and not because it directly benefits them.

It's going to be an uphill battle that will invariably die in the house if it even gets past the senate.
