I've got a 2nd game of FF5 going using rules, but the jobs were picked by the off-season page, so it's not official. I wanted to try out the Onion job set and I got one of the worst combinations: Thief/Monk/Bard/Dragoon. Geomancer instead of bard would be the other. I had to grind for Byblos and Soul Cannon took some resets. I just got through Archaeoaevis. But, even now bard's ability to cause stop is looking pretty nice.

!Lance is doing ~160 damage to Exdeath when powered by Krile's magic stat as a Bard. I gave it 2 earnest attempts with this team, but it is time to employ BorealRobin's !Hide trolling tactic against Exdeath. I didn't have an angel ring, but I did have three characters with !Hide to hope for a survivor from. Turns out it was level 27 Lenna as a dragoon.

Now that I have completed my unofficial Four Job Fiesta, I'm considering using the same jobs over on FF3 DS. Especially since I had thief for the wind crystal job and bard can break the damage cap against Cloud of Darkness. But... getting dragoon last means not being able to use it against Garuda.

@JTO_is_Typing I beat Garuda by sticking to my starting four since I knew the game punishes you for changing jobs. It's doable but I had stolen a lot of magic damage items with Thief over the course of the game.

Never beat the game proper though as FF3's final sequences don't want you to beat it.

@Pyral Thanks. I have finished the 3D remake of FF3 multiple times, including with self-imposed job restrictions.

It's true that the first incarnation of the job system unfortunately doesn't give you much reason to experiment, while the equipment you find or higher level spell charges push you to. Scholar pairs well with Thief for using those spell-casting items. If you ever want easy mode, though, keep someone as a Geomancer for free and steady magic damage and the rare Shadowflare.
