So how is connected ? I’ve seen some posts that seem to think they’re interoperable, but wondering how they connect and how they’re different.

@tvaziri I recently read your article about the Jaws animated shooting star and you mention an effect in The Blues Brothers but link to x/Twitter which is not working. Can you summarize this (or add it to a list to repost to your site if that’s easier)?

So amusingly I went to make a pixelfed.social account and discovered I already had one. Trying to reset it now but the site is still a bit swamped.

Got it working at pixelfed.social/ArtisanCrabGam and plan to use it for more of my trip photos and such.

@MacBalance tl;dr is that Mastodon is based on ActivityPub, so anything that speaks ActivityPub is by default interoperable. Interactions will be termined by how they implement responses to the various activitypub messages, and vice versa, such as "this message has a reply", but pixelfed is particularly good at this thus far, while, say, Lemmy isn't necessarily.

It's the same way Threads could hook up to Mastodon, just by implementing a handler for the protocol.

@NinjaDebugger So as an example I use Ivory for Mastodon. If I view a Pixelfed message am I losing anything as that app is focused on the Mastodon implementation? Is there Pixelfed-only data that is hidden on clients not aware of it?

@MacBalance

There may be limitations of the mastodon formatting, but any data that's important should be forwarded by pixelfed.

@MacBalance I've already had a few pixelfed posts show up in my masto feed over the last couple days. Works seamlessly, I only noticed because they mentioned leaving the gram and I clicked through to their home servers

@MacBalance I just boosted the last pixelfed post I remember seeing, this one. pixelfed.social/p/kojote/78778

I'm assuming it will show up in your timeline, and if it doesn't, I wonder why?

@Slyphic I did see that one. I think I’m trying to decide if I should get a pixel fed account and either move to it or run it in concert with mastodon.

My understanding based on other replies is it’s the same protocol underlying them and they interoperate.

@MacBalance I've been considering it as a better alternative to Imgur. It lets you directly access pics, doesn't seem to have any problems with hotlinking either. Really what I've been hemming and hawing over is whether to join a server or setup one myself. As much as I increasingly use ActivityPub parts of the net, I'm feeling the need to get my hands dirty and understand it better.

@MacBalance the link works but unfortunately you have to be logged into that awful website for it to work

i will eventually create a blog post about The Blues Brothers work
