Recommendations for a first RPG for a 9 year old? She likes fantasy and reading, so I think she'd like RPGs, but she also (1) likes games very easy, (2) dislikes pixel art, and (3) dislikes being forced to be male.

I'm thinking either Pokemon Shinning Pearl or Destiny Connect: Tick Tock Travelers.

@scribblemacher The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

Forgotten Anne is another good one IMO.

@scribblemacher Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee would also work, they're easier and more intended as an introduction to Pokemon for kids, have fun features like Pokemon roaming the overworld, and look less like a direct translation from pixel art to chibi 3D.

@arnelson thanks! I actually thought the Lets Go games were a spin offs that didn't have monster catching and stuff. Looking at some reviews, this is probably exactly what I was looking for.

@scribblemacher Pokémon is a great choice! The Monster Hunter Stories games might be interesting as well. My friends have spoken highly of them and they seemed neat the bits I’ve watched of them play.

@scribblemacher Pokémon shining pearl and Pokémon Lets go Eevee are great choices. Although? I would argue that BDSP’s elite four is one of the hardest NPCs of the whole series. It might be too difficult unless you teach her how to prepare competitive Pokémon (EVs, IV, nature).
I would say Let’s Go is more casual and “cuter” graphics

@Cyborg good to know about the elite four. I haven't played much Pokemon, so good to know this is one of the harder. My daughter did play a bit of yellow a few years ago. She caught NO Pokemon and tried to beast through with just Pikachu. I think she beat Brock... Somehow

@scribblemacher that’s funny lol
But she’ll definitely won’t be able to beat the BDSP’s elite four with just the starter lol Best believe that haha

@OutofPrintArchive @scribblemacher nice! I got the super edition with the dragon king plushie and jigsaw. To my shame I didn't actually finish the game, but I adored the characters and art style, and the Japanese narration was some serious ASMR

@COMPU73E @scribblemacher oh. I would have loved that plushie!
I’m so excited for these games. I can’t believe how I somehow missed out on these…
I always kept thinking I had plenty of time.
Watched some more Void Terrarium and it looks incredible.
Super hyped about Labyrinth of Refrain as well.

@OutofPrintArchive @COMPU73E interesting rec. Looks like a depressing take of Super Mario RPG. Probably not a good first RPG, but it can have a place in my dekudeals list!

@scribblemacher Wintermore Tactics Club is a super fun turn-based tactical rpg for pretty much all ages. It has a black, female protagonist; a diverse cast; a community-centering story; and great accessibility features (at any point in the game you can adjust your team's hp, enemy hp, and a few other things, so the challenge is just right for your needs). D&D-style game within the game. Great art and music as well. 🤓

@scribblemacher - I second all the votes for Pokémon and for Monster Hunter Stories. But I would also encourage asking: What games are the kids at school talking about? At this age (3rd grade or so), talking about games/playing pretend/drawing stuff with friends was a big part of the fun for my kids.

@NullNoMore This is a great point. Pretty much all of her friends play Animal Crossing (which she has played to death) and Kirby and the Forgotten Land (also played to death). She says lots of kids in class are into Minecraft, but when I let her try another first person game (Portal) she had a lot of trouble with the controls and moving two sticks at once (beasted pretty far into it though!)

@scribblemacher - I asked Youngest (now in high school) - they suggest Miitopia, Arceus, and Pioneers of Olive Town (and Minecraft but not on Switch)
