This is a deceptive photo, there were actually quite a lot of people on the beach this morning. I accidentally started my meditation timer just before I went into the water, so I know I swam for an hour and six minutes!

Odd thing about being in the sea, especially if it's choppy like it was this morning, with fairly big waves: it helps me break out of any mental holding pattern I've been in. After this swim, I closed my world building and planning documents, and started writing my new book, the sequel to We Broke the Moon. Yesterday that still felt like an impossible thing to do.

Last week, my main character's other love interest picked a few books out for him to read, calling it "homework".

I, the author, haven't read one of the books in question. Or rather, hadn't--courtesy of Project Gutenberg, I'm reading it now.

That's right, I am officially getting reading homework from my characters...

#PennedPossibilities 591 — How do you handle research?

I do some research. Like writing about a specific college I might be familiar with. My MC was in a college at one point so I researched tuition, demographics, majors, etc. I like to talk to people, too. my #WIP takes place in Brooklyn. I have only been there once, but I talked to people who knew what Brooklyn was like. I also do internet research, but mostly I write about stuff I know.

Mr. Whiskers was not happy. His mother had stuffed him in a carrier for a drive somewhere. Likely it was the Bad Place where they stuck him with needles. Howling yielded no pity, so he started working on the door mechanism. You'd think it was too complicated, but he figured it out. Within seconds he had dug his claws into the vinyl seats and launched himself onto the rear deck. Now, his mother was not happy.

In the blur
of this weary existence
I wander city streets
seeking some sort
of half ass absolution
for the vast #reservoir
of my selfish actions

Always attracting
strange looks
from the judgemental population
as I mutter
half baked poetry to myself
into the indifferent wind

Clumsy stabs
at rhythmic perfection
while spouting
deep reflections
on the meaning
of my ebbing life

All these disjointed
connections
that never seems
to find completed
puzzle resolution

Closure mocks
and eludes me
as horns blare
at the catatonic kook
staring up at the traffic light
in the middle of Strange Street

My padded cell awaits

Now up to 63,321 words written for the first draft of my #scifi novel. Tonight's scene was emotional. Our hero was made to confront a huge flaw in himself and he could almost do it. But the call back to the world he can never return to was just too strong. Better shake it off and come up with a plan to get out of this mess!
