They call themselves ‘lashunta’. Unsure whether that means their kingdom, tribe, or their kind, though it seemingly applies to them all and each, even the tall women and the squat men. They all have the buglike feelers on their brows, which twitch and wave endlessly, seemingly in time with what they are doing or thinking. Also, they all do the thing at times when their feelers quiver, and they apparently speak by thought alone. It is eery watching two or more do something together without ever a word.

The Lady Knight, as we have called her, is named Vah-yeh-ol, nearly as I can make out. Only with her have we spoken, for only she speaks any Elvish. Draxy speaks a little as well, which means she can only talk through us. She is the captain of this patrol and calls herself ‘Outrider’ in Elvish, which I guess names her rank moreso than role. Her arms certainly bespeak high standing. She wears a light cuirass of oil-blue steel strips damascened with bronze, and a silver sunburst as badge, a mark all these warriors bear on breastplates, belts, or shields. Her helm, armbands, spearblade, shield, and greaves also bear damask-work. Her thighs, however, are protected by flaps of more of that odd, fleshy hide, though with ornate bronze rivets. Compared to knights I’ve seen back on Golarion, her armor looks fairly light, though anyone wearing a full suit of plates in this swelter would fall from heat-stroke in a quarter-hour.

Bywardly, Tae brought word that the Outlander wretches still waited. I left my Shotalashu in good hands and went back with another foursome host, where I found them tending their wounded fellows and giving their wardens little bother. I took my first long look at these Outlanders and their oddness, notwithstanding their gibberish speech. On a whim I again went to their leader and tried mindspeech. To my forecaughtness, he answered in ill-shapen Elvish. I reckoned this news and bade them stand down. A breathtide he gazed, and then looked to his fellows. At his word they all cast their weapons to ground.

I bade Oshis find us all a fast campstead, whither he led us to a glowfern grove whose light well bestood. Soon as we set watch, I overlooked our caught thralls. At first I had guessed them Elves, unleastly for their leader’s speech, and forwhy also they have no antennae. Yet they also have beards, which made no good thought. There skin and hair are oddly wan, switching dark, bronze, and light, but no green, copper, or bronze.

With axes raised, we took all their gear and searched thoroughly. Their clothes and harness were queerly cut, and their leather stank oddly. The red sap we had found was indeed their blood, as shown on their two wounded, though I have never seen blood so darkly red. They also wore high sandals that hid not only their toes and whole foot, by also whelmed their legs almost to knee. So I bade them strip, which they withholdingly listened.

Then from the ferns came riders on their lizards, and the bowmen beside them. The Knight came walking on foot, and its steed following. It had also doffed helm, revealing features for the first time. I saw a crestlike, rosy-blond braid atop a face of golden-brown, with sides shorn short from temple to ears, and ruddy stripes running along, wide slanted golden eyes, and a smooth, soft face bare of any beard. If I had to guess, I would say it was a woman. Even odder, from her brow sprouted two feelers, just like on a bug’s head. While I watched, they twitched and lashed. A bowman came up to the Knight and spoke. He likewise removed helm, baring shortly cropped hair over a full beard. He was almost two feet shorter than she, who even had a couple inches on my six feet. Like her, he grew feelers from his head, but afterward the resemblance ended. Where she was tall, he was squat. Where she was slim, we was thick and broad. Where she was smooth and fine, he was rough and hairy. If not for those queer twitching feelers, I would have thought them nothing like. I remembered the lore I had read back in Absalom: "The men look like Dwarves, and the women like Elves." I stared at them and wondered whether they could somehow be of the same kind. My head could not reckon it. Were these the warrior-race who shared this world with Elves?

I headed us into one of the weird fern brakes that broke the otherwise low-rising mushroom undergrowth. My first thought was the frond-brush might give warning of any stealthiness. Unluckily, at knee height it was perfect for the weird cat-monster to move through on all fours. I would take anything - an overturned stump, an upright tree - so long as we could set all our back to it. I cursed the landscape and swiftly led us out to the other side.

Light blinded when I stepped through the ferns' far side, the cold searing kind spelled by wizards. Under its glare a dozen shadows loomed on guard. I saw wide-crested helms, spears upraised, and bows nocked and drawn. Gods be good, there were people! Then I witted the steeds they rode, nothing familiar about them. There were some kind of wingless drake or giant lizard. At our presence from the ferns, they bellowed raspily, snouts questing the air.

At their line’s midst, right across from me, sat a tall rider, towering in armor. At sight, I could only call it a knight. The magelight shone in a ball floating over the Knight’s head, who lowered a wide-bladed spear at my chest and spoke something warbling. Yet I did not need to know to understand a challenge. My men's welfare hung in balance between the stealthy cat-hunter behind and these warriors before. With no more thought, I knelt. I laid my sword before the Knight’s lizard-steed. I pointed backward, where doubtlessly the hunting horror still lurked.

More bad luck today. We found ahead first a riot of pastels, and then a break in the woods, our first in several days. With our morale so low, I had no holding them back. They rushed into the clearing, and I followed. This glade among the giant trees had resulted from a stony outcrop, low but broad, which the trees had not found root on. Instead, what I would call a jungle-like scrub (lusher by far than we would call back home) flourished: vines, brambles, and bamboo-like shrubs, each fighting all else to rise above or choke the others out. More interesting were their leaves. I had already suspected something odd, based on the jungle’s deadfall. I now found they were, although green on the topside, any number of hues on their bottoms, from blues, golds, and an exotic purple-pink. So bright was this diffusion that true blossoms got lost within the color-blaze. Fruits and berries also dangled from the low-lying plants, which had me harrying the men from eating, lest they be poison.

I rightfully feared this greenness, though for the wrong reason. Vern, who had quickly come around to my advice, was clambering through a thicket to bring the men to heel, when a towering flower-shrub suddenly stirred above him! Its giant beaklike bulb-head bowed and struck. Vern bewared and leapt aside, too late. It fleshy maw snapped on his leg and lifted him skyward.

Below while we climbed down, I beheld a wonderful sight, almost like again being among the mountains at the Hall of Stars and seeing naked Heaven for the first time. Instead of darkness, the Darkfloor glowed. Feymote-spoors floated aloft, and purple and blue rings that betold mushroom-treecaps lit underneath. When at last we reached the floor and looked upward, it was even more wonderful.

Today was but my second time on the Darkfloor, and ereward was nothing like. Oshis has scouted it, as have Tae, Less, and some other warriors. Though darkness abounds, in patches the glowlight dazzles. The loft heredown is overwhelmingly damp, and whose mist spreads the glow. They tell it rains heredown wholly shed from above.

Swiftly we worked a plan to scout. I stayed at midst with the foot-warriors, shieldbearers, and packbeasts, while the riders headed outward in four teams each with a reeve. I cast a witchlight upward upon a mushroom-tree tall and bright, as beacon for their comeback. The foot-warriors waited with me against sake that balethings might be drawn to our light. Luckily, none came.

Belltides crawled by until a horn blew off to our north, on which bode all scout-teams should come to my beacon. Bywardly all came back, and Tae’s team bore word they had found a firestead, where they had left a twain to mark it while we others gathered. We all yaysaid smoke could be what yesterday had unsettled the Shota, though who would willingly fare the Darkfloor?
