After five years of on and off listening, today I finally reached the end of BBC Three’s Sound of Gaming program, which journeys behind the scene of our favourite music.

It’s a great listen but what I find astonishing is that not once was Jean-Michel Jarre mentioned. Vangelis was. Kraftwerk were. Heck even Tangerine Dream got a shout, but not him.

I say this because his influence on game musicians was massive, and a lot of them still regard him as one of the greatest.

Sobtanian

If you’re a gamer of a certain vintage, you’ve probably heard his music without even realising it’s his, as many 8 bit musicians copied his tracks for stuff.

This video highlights some of them.

I have noticed that the BBC almost pretend that Jarre doesn’t exist. Even when there’s a program on radio or TV that is about early electronic music, he doesn’t get mentioned.

I’m not sure why to be honest.

Finally, on a semi-related note, it is for this reason that I remain eternally grateful for whoever put the soundtrack for BBC 4’s brilliant Micro Men. Not only is it a great show (tells the story of Sinclair vs Acorn to get the BBC Micro contract) but the soundtrack is perfect, featuring Vangelis, Kraftwerk, and of course Jarre himself :)

You can watch the whole thing (it’s only one hour and 20 minutes long) here:
