This Western wood peewee was putting on a little show just for me the other day at a local parklet by the river's mouth.

E would pose on this post, then sally out for midges with a wonderful display of aerial acrobatics before returning to land with a literal "Ta-da!" ✨

I'm such a fan of flycatchers (another bird my guide slights by calling it "drab" and "nondescript overall" 🙄), and this was a five star show. Way to sally, little peewee!

A few more photos of my acrobatic friend. It was really a great afternoon performance--highly recommend catching one if your local theater-in-the-park venue offers .

The charming Western peewee from the previous post is standing atop eir post in the park, poised to sally after a midge--eir head is lowered in alignment with eir tail so that e is a fluffy dart, eir tiny legs staggered as though resting in starting blocks.
Our friend the Western peewee is perched atop the post in a rare moment of stillness between acts, shown in profile, tiny bill tipped up just a bit, rehearsing the next sally in eir mind.
Photo of Peewee just after darting from the top of the post, wings lifted up and back (but not yet spread), tiny feet like the wheels on a biplane. There is no chance e'll miss eir heart's desire (which at this frozen moment is a nearly invisible midge).
