@gamingonlinux I think the honeymoon period of digital purchases is over and it's time to get some proper legislation about it. I find it highly misleading to say I'm "purchasing" something, when I'm really getting a temporary license with uncertain expiration date.
@apzpins @gamingonlinux On a related note (because it's PlayStation), we need legislation for proper archival of games. Plenty of countries have a law that mandates archival copies of newly released books for national libraries. We should do the same for games, preferably together with source code and all subsequent patches.
@shine You are absolutely right. We're already witnessing some games being lost when licenses are pulled and the game's legal status is complicated so no one can re-release it.
The people in charge see games more of a "use and throw away" things than parts of actual culture and art. That also needs to change.
@apzpins Yep, I'm working with one game archival group and it's getting worse and worse :/
@shine My brand of restoring also has its challenges.
You'd think you own rights to use the software updates and copies of manuals if you own the actual game, but at least for Gottlieb rights were sold after the company folded and now the investors want money for the ROM images and manual scans.
My conscience isn't too badly affected by using update images and manuals I've found on the net.
