Another random thing that made me happy tonight: I discovered that at some point #wordweb added a feature to disable linking of words in addon dictionaries. That makes reading definitions with a #screenreader much faster. It's a bit expensive, but if you frequently find yourself resorting to Google, or even worse #AI, to define words for you, it's worth the money and is largely #accessible as well: wordweb.info/ #a11y

Only about a week remaining for submitting a talk at the Inclusive Web devroom in FOSDEM 2025. The last date for submission is 30th November, 2024. If you are someone who works in security, privacy, accessibility, localisation or any other topic that you feel makes the web inclusive and usable by everyone, you should definitely submit a talk! FOSDEM is a conference for people passionate about FOSS and I feel it's really important to discuss these topics in this space, so that Open Source tools for the web can be more inclusive.

This is just a lament that #AltText isn’t used more universally. Some of the accounts I follow on here are rather prolific posters, and much of what they post are unlabeled graphics. For those of us who use screenreaders to access content, #AltText would make life a lot easier, since screenreaders for the most part can’t handle graphics. As a result, all I often get is my speech synthesizer saying the word image. Part of me doesn’t even want to bring this up, because it makes me feel like a schmo to ask people to do an extra step when they’re already trying to put out a lot of content. But, that being said, I’d like to have full access to that content as well, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. #A11Y

I've been using tpgi.com/color-contrast-checke a lot this year to check contrast in @FirefoxDevTools

As I'm currently working on High Contrast Theme for DevTools, I noticed CCA UI wasn't really adapting well to HCM.

Turns out this is an electron app, so I was able to jump on it and add support for High Contrast: github.com/ThePacielloGroup/CC

(I wish we'd have a standard equivalent of `-moz-context-properties`, would have saved me from using mask)

TPGiColour Contrast Analyser (CCA) - TPGiTPGi's ADA Color Contrast Checker helps determine the accessibility of the contrast ratio of two colors for WCAG AA and AAA.

Attention all airline carriers, your native apps are not websites. Please stop building lazy hybrid experiences that make web views the norm in the Booking and other important screens in your apps! Web-centric components and designs do not belong in native apps, period. It may be cheaper to develop and faster to deploy, but these web views are slow and are very difficult to use with #AssistiveTechnology if not outright #Inaccessible. Do what's right, not what is easy!#A11y

TalkBack 15.1 now includes links in the one-finger swipes for selecting actions! I just need to change my muscle memory, since opening the TalkBack menu is no longer necessary.

I love these details that make certain common actions more convenient to use. Accessibility should not be just letting disabled people use or enjoy something. Usability matters, making something easy or convenient matters, too.
