Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>Cases of <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> continue to fall, a week or two later than they did last year. Unfortunately, cases and hospitalizatios of <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/COVID" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>COVID</span></a> are going up.</p><p>I'm going to be pissed if we have a full-blown Spring <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/COVID19" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>COVID19</span></a> wave and I have to start moving karaoke online, after months of not singing in person to avoid spreading <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/influenza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>influenza</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSVirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSVirus</span></a>! </p><p>While there are meaningful numbers of people being hospitalized for airborne diseases, I <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in elevators, trains and doctors' offices!</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>At least <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> cases are continuing to drop - although not as steeply as I'd like them to!</p><p>Current combined hospitalization rates for COVID, <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/influenza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>influenza</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSVirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSVirus</span></a> are below 6 per lakh per day, but that was barely tolerable in past flu seasons. I want to see the ends of these winter waves!</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>Also frustrated that the <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> Department of Health and Mental Hygiene still isn't releasing accurate hospitalization counts for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a>, but it looks like the case counts are finally down to relatively low levels - below 8,000 for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/influenza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>influenza</span></a> and below 700 for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a>! </p><p>I think I finally feel comfortable hosting karaoke in person next week, for the first time this year!</p><p>But as long as there are lots of people suffering and dying, I still <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in trains, buses and doctors' offices!</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>It looks like as of the week ending March 1, <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> cases in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> have now been below 1,000 for two weeks. The <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> is below 10,000 cases per week, and hospital visits for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/InfluenzaLikeIllness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InfluenzaLikeIllness</span></a> are below 8%!</p><p>To be safe, I'm going to skip the live band karaoke I was hoping to attend last week, but I will be hosting karaoke over Zoom on Monday!</p><p>My mother and I are still recovering from <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a> that was diagnosed in early February. Please <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in hospitals, doctors' offices and trains!</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>Due to incomplete data, it turns out the <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> case count in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> was NOT below 1,000 in the week ending February 15. But it's again reported below 1,000 for the week ending February 22.</p><p>Cases of <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSVirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSVirus</span></a> and the <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> are clearly trending down. Let's hope they keep dropping, and don't get revised up too far!</p><p>In combination with the drop in COVID cases, this suggests that overall March will be safer from respiratory infections. It's stil a good idea to <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in crowded spaces !</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p><a href="https://toot.cat/tags/influenza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>influenza</span></a> cases are dropping in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a>, and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsv" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsv</span></a> is now down below 1,000 cases a week. Small comfort if, like me, you've been caring for a loved one who's been in and out of hospitals with the <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a> for three weeks!</p><p>Still, in combination with the plateau in COVID cases, it should be safer to relax precautions - eating indoors more, singing karaoke, maybe taking a plane trip.</p><p>But I still <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in elevators, trains, buses, doctors' offices, hospitals, pharmacies and supermarkets!</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>We hear these statistics - there are currently 31 people a day hospitalized for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/COVID" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>COVID</span></a> in NYC. What does it mean to be hospitalized for an infectious disease?</p><p>Unfortunately, I've recently had a front seat. My mom was hospitalized for <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/pneumonia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pneumonia</span></a> last Friday night. Every case is different, but this can give you an idea...</p><p><a href="https://grieve-smith.com/ftn/2025/02/what-infectious-disease-hospitalization-looks-like/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">grieve-smith.com/ftn/2025/02/w</span><span class="invisible">hat-infectious-disease-hospitalization-looks-like/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a></p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p>My 86-year-old mom's in the hospital with <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> and pneumonia, but I have the <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a> too, so I haven't been able to visit her for two days. Fortunately my kid went and I talked to Mom on the phone, and she's stable.</p><p>I was well enough just now to go to the supermarket, where I always <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> . On the way, my hairdresser said a lot of people have been canceling due to <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> or RSV.</p><p>I heard a cough that sounded exactly like the one I've been making the past couple days. It was the publican.</p>
Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith<p><a href="https://toot.cat/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> was still on the rise in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/NYC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NYC</span></a> the week before last, nowhere near the peaks from the past two years, but it looks like the winter <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/RSV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSV</span></a> wave peaked in the week ending December 21!</p><p><a href="https://toot.cat/tags/rsvirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsvirus</span></a> appears to have peaked at the same level as last year, and slightly lower than 2022-2023.</p><p>Here's hoping we have relatively mild, quick winter waves for COVID and <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/influenza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>influenza</span></a> and no big outbreaks of pneumonia or bird flu!</p><p>For now, I'm avoiding in-person karaoke and I <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> in trains and supermarkets!</p>
