PSA: If you have a system with Windows 95/98 and it has the Windows Update folder (C:\Program Files or A:\Program Files on the PC-98), ESPECIALLY if it is not in the English language, please back these up as the Windows Update Restored project is seeking these (share them to MSFN or the DIscord)

This PC-98 I got from YAJ had catalog files for IE5.5 + Windows 95 for WU V3 that are going to be added soon to allow updates to work again.

#RetroGaming Did you know?

- #WingCommander *didn't* hack a DPMI error when it closed. That's a myth.

- #Myst was written in HyperCard on the Mac, w/ a plugin for big 256-color images. Broderbund created a custom(?) engine to port it to Windows.

- #Undertale has some wonky code, but it still works! Good code is only important if you want your game to run on a 486 (I wish Undertale ran on a 486!)

- #SimCity2000 for #Windows3 had a use-after-free bug that #Windows95 was patched to accommodate.

Did you know that the concept of "OS-tan" has existed way before even ME-tan was made?

Take OS Idol Win-chan as an example. Win-chan's earliest appearance in media seems to be from a promotional CD by Enterbrain, which dates back as early as October 1998. This would mean that Win-chan predates Me-tan by almost 5 years. It's not specified what Windows version she represents.

Another example can be Magical Toko-chan who is from around 1999. She seems to represent BSD, has a theme song called "Rainbow Holy☆Trident" and has a sister that represents Solaris.

There is also also another "Wintel Miku" although there’s little art of her. She seems to represent WindowsNT4.0/95/98 and was created as the creator was inspired by Mgaical Toko.

Besides Win-Chan, Magical Toko, Solaris-Chan and Wintel Miku all have sites dedicared to them!

Toko: tokochan.haun.org/

Solaris-Chan: pony.tail.net/toko/sol.html

Wintel Miku: web.archive.org/web/2000022606

Also fun fact, Win-chan was made by the creator of Sgt.Frog and the concept designer for Kemono Friends, Yoshizaki Mine! This can be seen on his profile for his site here: mnet.nicomi.com/MINEprofile/YO

My poll about #retrocomputing systems used daily/mostly has ended.
The absolute winner is DOS, followed by Win9x/XP. Third place for Apple DOS / ProDOS / GS OS, followed closely by Amiga OS.

Now the logical next question is: What do you do with your preferred retrocomputing system?

I'm going to prepare a poll for this question, stay tuned 😉
