Headlines Africa<p>Africa: Online 'Manosphere' Is Moving Misogyny to the Mainstream: [UN News] A decline in democracy and harmful content spread on social media platforms are helping to drive a backlash against feminism, and the growth of misogynistic and retrograde ideas about the roles of men and women and society. <a href="http://newsfeed.facilit8.network/TJQnv1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">http://</span><span class="ellipsis">newsfeed.facilit8.network/TJQn</span><span class="invisible">v1</span></a> <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Manosphere" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manosphere</span></a> <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Misogyny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Misogyny</span></a> <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Feminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Feminism</span></a> <a href="https://journa.host/tags/SocialMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialMedia</span></a> <a href="https://journa.host/tags/GenderRoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenderRoles</span></a></p>

I was welcomed into any informal groups where boys and adults could not protest. It seemed obvious I belonged there. The adults enforcing stereotypes would drag me away, sometimes even physically. And the boys competed with each other for the most aggressive bullying strategies. I don't think they cared who I was, they just wanted to impress each other. The article acknowledges it is only portion of the problem of declining male enrollment. However, it also points out how gender role influence is being ignored. I think it is correct in that it is a significant problem, if largely from my experience and that of others.</p><p>You wrote:</p><blockquote><p>Some personalities, male and female, are temperamentally inclined toward action and doing rather than objective study...</p></blockquote><p>Is this not simply another shade of gender roles, something learned and then reinforced by our society? My spouse and I acknowledge we have reversed gender roles, and our "temperament inclines" us to differently "gendered" solutions as a result. My goddaughter once shied away from math because her female peers thought it wasn't something girls did. Her parents "corrected" that misconception about gender roles, and now she's a doctorate candidate in mechanical engineering working on a top flight astrophysics project.</p><p>I work to reflect upon my context and ensure it doesn't color my logic, but I do make this argument nevertheless. Furthermore, I try not to see everything as black and white:</p><blockquote><p>So college is seen as girly and gay...</p></blockquote><p>... by a statistically significant population of those that might have otherwise attended college, <em>not a majority.</em> More data is required, and I think promoting the article may promote researching whether or not this is an increasing factor educators can combat.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/boostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boostingIsSharing</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/EngenderedWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EngenderedWriting</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/genderroles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genderroles</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/college" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>college</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/university" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>university</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersofmastodon</span></a> </p><p>re: <a href="https://celestemdavis.substack.com/p/why-boys-dont-go-to-college" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">celestemdavis.substack.com/p/w</span><span class="invisible">hy-boys-dont-go-to-college</span></a></p>

Media and popular culture glorify gender norms. Male gender roles teach female domination, so is it any wonder, if not taught any better, that men find it hard to treat women as equal, as peers, or are willing to accept them as superiors? </p><p>College with "too many women" stops being a place where "a man" (pejorative) can find brainy marriage prospects (to answer your question) that can make a man's life more equitable—and instead becomes intimidating. Just as a room of mostly women is comfortable for a woman compared to one full of men, the opposite is very true. Sadly. And what can we attribute that fear to? Teaching gender roles instead of each person is A Person exactly the same as you regardless of strength or sex. </p><p>This is why I am an author. I try to depict worlds that aren't scary because of gender because that isn't necessary to be fully human. There is so much more than being human than being brutish in this way. </p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/EngenderedWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EngenderedWriting</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/GenderRoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenderRoles</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/WritersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/WritingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritingCommunity</span></a></p>

Teaching our children they're only good enough if they adhere to male or female gender roles maims and cripples them for life. Gender roles make people conform so a society can control them and strip choice and individuality that harms power structures, or privileged authority. It harms flexibility to excel and if our times hint at anything, promote a return to brutishness. </p><p>I highly recommend this article. Three Chords and Forsooth!<p>TL;DR: <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/genderroles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genderroles</span></a>, Christianity, and US politics</p><p>When I was <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/LDS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LDS</span></a> I gave a lot of talks in church. This is normal. There's no clapping in Sacrament Meeting, but people express their appreciation for especially good talks afterward, with a handshake or a "nice talk!" </p><p>Well, I gave a few that got no positive responses. For example, I once gave a talk--backed up with plenty of scriptures and prophetic utterances--asserting that Jesus' message could validly be interpreted as "Brothers, why can't you be more like your sisters?"</p><p>I still think this is a reasonable take on the teachings of Jesus as appearing in the <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Bible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bible</span></a> (and the Book of <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Mormon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mormon</span></a> and Doctrine &amp; Covenants). Turning the other cheek, not complaining about your occupiers' oppression, blessing those who despitefully use you, and--gasp--identifying with a sexually promiscuous woman instead of the people trying to punish her: these are direct rejections of age-old hegemonic <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/masculinity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>masculinity</span></a>.</p><p>Yeah, nobody told me they enjoyed my talk that day.</p><p>And here we are, at least 20 years into the violent return of the most toxic wife-beater rhetoric. All our big fascists are going all in on pure contempt for femininity and <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a>, rabidly preaching <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/misogyny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>misogyny</span></a>. Most of them call themselves "Christian," while their "<a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Christian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Christian</span></a>" followers cheer. </p><p>This is not an education issue; this is not ignorance. Every one of those Christians cheering Joe Rogan, Andrew Tate, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and now Zuck and Bezos have 100% been taught the words of Jesus. They've been sermonized to since birth about the Man from Galilee feeding the poor, talking with women at wells instead of men in houses, and telling rich guys to give away their wealth if they want to go to heaven. Shantell Powell<p>Years ago, I stopped by a supermarket after a gym session. I was wearing a tank top and my shoulder tattoo was visible. I was looking at something or another on a shelf when an elderly man got pretty close to me. I assumed I was blocking something he wanted to get at, so I shuffled out of the way. Then I realized he was looking at me, not the food. </p><p>His lips were pressed tightly together, and he was shaking his head in a tsk-tsk sort of way. "You're a woman, you have a tattoo, and that is not--"</p><p>I interrupted him cheerily. "Not your body. Not your business. Bye!"</p><p>I left him there all judgy-faced without a target. I guess he had the sanctimonious equivalent of blue balls. Boo hoo. </p><p>Later on, I told someone about this, and they chided me for not taking a tongue-lashing from that old man. "Fuck that," I said. "That's how I spent my first twenty years. I don't owe that to anyone."<br><a href="https://c.im/tags/judgmental" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>judgmental</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/OldFart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OldFart</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/MyBody" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MyBody</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/tattoos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tattoos</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/GenderRoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenderRoles</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/ExJW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExJW</span></a></p>
Three Chords and Forsooth!<p>Leadership. Growing up a boy/man in the LDS church means you are constantly being encouraged, pressured, or bribed toward "leadership." Women/girls don't get this, of course. And I do not want to be a leader any more than I have to.</p><p>I don't think I have amazing leadership skills. It took me years to realize that, for Mormon men, "leadership" was a stand-in for "worthiness as a human." My repeated, occasionally successful attempts to dodge "leadership" were probably one of the things that made a lot of people look askance at me, despite me living all the rules as well as most humans can be expected to. If I didn't crave leadership, then could I really be righteous?</p><p>The corporate world is similar. I've heard many stories from people who entered a particular field to do the work--psychotherapy, psychiatry, medicine, education, etc.--only to find that, after a few years, they couldn't get jobs doing that, any longer; they could only get leadership jobs. Many people climb the ladder looking for those, maybe because they tend to pay well. Some of us, however, do not.</p><p>I lead my research teams, my classes, and outings to the beach with my kid. If I have a specific need for leadership, such as a project that needs to be managed, I do my best. But I don't have a general desire to be a "leader," and I think I have a slight initial suspicion of anyone who does.</p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/leadership" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leadership</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/lds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lds</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/mormon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mormon</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/exmormon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>exmormon</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/genderroles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genderroles</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/LetMeDoMyJob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LetMeDoMyJob</span></a></p>

I plan to release it for a minimum of a one month run either in November or December, depending on when I collect 30 (or 31) prompts. Gender fiction addresses gender roles, but also concerns itself with gay and straight, feminist, trans, gender-fluid, enby, and ace topics. Our expression of gender is how we, or our characters, coexist in society. It's about being who you are (unique and special) and maybe fighting for that. Or hiding it.</p><p>My problem is that I have my favorite topics; I realize my focus could be broader. Do you have any suggestions for questions that address gender, lgbtqia+ issues, or gender roles <em>together with</em> writing, stories, or being an author? I'd love to round off my list, which is up to 21 as I write this. I'll present any that I like as community submitted questions.</p><p>Please reply to this post or use the hashtag <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/EngenderedWriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EngenderedWriting</span></a>.</p><p>Thanks a bunch, <br>R.S.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/genderRoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genderRoles</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/feminist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feminist</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/trans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trans</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/enby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>enby</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/ace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ace</span></a></p>
