This Is My Glasgow<p>Secondly, it wasn't Frederick Soddy who introduced the word at the dinner party. Instead it was proposed to him by his cousin, the physician Margaret Todd (one of the first women to obtain a medical degree from the Edinburgh School of Medicinw for Women). Soddy then introduced the word to the rest of the world in a 1913 paper in the scientific journal Nature.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/chemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chemistry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/womeninscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>womeninscience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/historyofscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historyofscience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/historyofchemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historyofchemistry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowuniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowuniversity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/plaque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>plaque</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/memorial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>memorial</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/isotope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>isotope</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/lexicography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lexicography</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>I love that Glasgow University has a plaque on one of its buildings marking the birthplace of the word Isotope. Unfortunately, it has two rather major errors. Firstly, the dinner party where the word was first introduced didn't happen in 1913, but sometime between 1909 and 1912.</p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/chemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chemistry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/womeninscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>womeninscience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/historyofscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historyofscience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/historyofchemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historyofchemistry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowuniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowuniversity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/plaque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>plaque</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/memorial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>memorial</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/isotope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>isotope</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/lexicography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lexicography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/margarettodd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>margarettodd</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/fredericlsoddy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fredericlsoddy</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>One of the two remaining classical town houses on University Gardens in Glasgow designed by J.J. Burnet and built in 1882. </p><p>These buildings are famous of two things: </p><p>1. Having the cheapest beer on campus (when they housed the Research Club). </p><p>2. Being the birthplace the word 'Isotope' in 1913.</p><p>I don't think these two claims to fame are related in any way (but then again, who knows!).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowuniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowuniversity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/isotope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>isotope</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowbuildings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowarchitecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowarchitecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a></p>

Emilia Jarochowska 🇺🇦🌱<p>Scientist's life is: hardly being able to sleep from excitement. This week we kicked off not one, but TWO new projects with two new team members. The second one will be experimental <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/diagenesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diagenesis</span></a> in <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/foraminifera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>foraminifera</span></a>, which are widely used for <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>climate</span></a> reconstructions. They record the <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/isotope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>isotope</span></a> composition of the seawater in which they lived, but that composition may be altered after their death - we will try to reproduce this experimentally in the lab as part of a nessc.nl project. I started a <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/palaeontology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeontology</span></a> BSc course 👩🏼‍🏫 by incorporating analytical methods and teaching students documentation of their analyses by using <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/RMarkdown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RMarkdown</span></a>. It is an attempt to change the perception of <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/palaeontology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeontology</span></a> from descriptive and exploratory to a more hypothetico-deductive and quantitative field. And I finished at the Uni of Leicester 🇬🇧 with the big honour of examining a PhD candidate who epitomized this approach by establishing a quantitative proxy for the trophic level of <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/conodonts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>conodonts</span></a> and possibly any <a href="https://circumstances.run/tags/invertebrates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>invertebrates</span></a> with dental tools. And that's just the highlights. It's a big privilege to be a scientist.</p>
