The Bonsai Diary, a very slow #journaling #game about deliberately drawing a single stroke of a bonsai tree every day. Lots of themes about intention and growth and multigenerational projects. Written by Gene Koo @stickydoodler.
Stole a seed pod from a tree in my favorite park. I geminated it in my refrigerator and have been growing it in a plastic seed tray for almost a year. I might not ever see my home again, but I can take this part of it with me.
It's time to pot the seedlings. Some have not germinated, some have not grown well, but this one is healthy. Life is still hectic now, and there is nothing laying around but this coffee cup. "Hey, we both made it to our new home." It's hot and dry and lonely on the prairie, maybe not the best place to grow. "Let's just focus on putting down roots for now, we can worry about majesty later."

We've both settled in. I've found a round dish with simple curves and feet. The park at my home had a lake and a gently curving walkway around the shore. The green-blue glaze of the terracotta evokes memories of my walks along the shore. Like her taller sisters in the mountains, it is likely this bonsai will outlive me. I have no family to take care of her. Will she be lost with the rest of my memories?

Days go by and sometimes things change so slowly you don't even notice. The bonsai is healthy and strong. I can't remember the exact moment she stopped feeling so fragile but she has grown into her tray now. Taller, more confident and in accord with her surroundings. When did we take to our new soil? What was the point where we started to thrive?
