PSYCHO WAND, MY BELOVED
a dark comedy short story about gaming addiction & the value of digital treasure inspired by Phantasy Star Online.

if you happen to read it, let me know what you think.

oncomputer.games/2024/04/28/ps

(written with over 70 footnotes that add context and flavor to the '90s-00s setting. some of the footnotes are paragraphs long. the footnotes are not necessary to understand the story as they function more as a way to break the third person perspective to provide context & personal stories around the various 90s-2000s things that pop up throughout the story. NOTE: if you read on the site, you can click a footnote number, then click the arrow after the actual footnote to take you back.)

last time i'm boosting this.

going to start on the 2nd issue of magazine, and this is the main feature. the other big ones are Gundam: Journey to Jaburo and Pokemon Crystal/retrospective/something. along with a bunch of smaller articles about other titles and a section on the PS2.

my idea is to put the story on one page, and the footnotes on the corresponding page so you can just look back and forth easily.

@buru5 Just got done reading the piece, took about an hour and 20 minutes.

I enjoyed this foray into fictional story-telling, the reliance on footnotes and eclectic use of pop-culture, gaming, random trivia throughout reminded me of a novel I read last year called House of Leaves. Not sure if you're familiar.

The footnotes are a nice way to incorporate some of the dry, mundane explanation/analysis writing that I know you detest using in your prose. I didn't think it interrupted the flow much

@buru5 Either way, this was an engrossing read, and a reminder of how much work I have cut out to improve as a writer. Keep up the great work, man, would love to see more like this!

Also, I think I found a picture of that William guy

@rootcompute

thanks for taking the time to read this and hope you got something out of it.

and lol. i haven't seen Office Space in a minute.

heard of House of Leaves but haven't read it myself, might put it on the list. the footnote decision was more influenced by Infinite Jest.

reading through it again without footnotes; it might be better to read it without footnotes the first time, then footnotes afterwards. or something. footnotes do have a way of taking you out of the story sometimes.

@rootcompute

also, i'm glad that you found the footnotes useful for dry stuff like setting/gameplay explanations; i found them to be a good vessel for this as well. one could potentially put an entire "review" in a footnote without it influencing the piece.

@buru5 I am very in favor of this and of bonus chao
