Welp. That didn't last long.

I've decided to stop playing .

Combat is great. The world is great. It looks great. But fuck, I cannot fucking stand having to trapse through 2 minutes of level just to get back to a boss fight (in which I'll likely die soon after entering the arena).

I'm very early. I've heard that frustration will only increase as I progress through the game and you know what? I don't have that sort of time.

Trying to put this frustration onto the internet is hard because you invariably get hit with the comments about 'getting gd' or some bullshit about how Fromsoft's design philosophy is unimpeachable...but nah, I just don't have the time.

So I'm going to jump off and move onto something I might actually enjoy; maybe it's time to replay or give (2023) another look?

Goodbye , I barely knew ya.

@danielholt I have tried so many times to get through that first part of Boletarian Palace but have never been able to.

@oldthink34 it's not even that difficult, I just find the length of time it takes to get back to be almost insulting as a player.

Yes, the dragon does most of the work but I still have to wait, sprint, wait, sprint etc etc. It's tedious as fuck.

@danielholt While I finished Dark Souls 2 & 3 as is, I finished Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls 1 with mods that cut the damage received in half. Now I even play Soulslikes that give you difficulty selector. And I enjoy all these games!

Play the games you want to play the way you want to play them!

@danielholt I think that stopping playing the game is a very sensible thing to do, because yes, as amazing as the world is, the way levels are structured in there can be pretty frustrating. And there's a few of them (especially 3-2 and 4-2 come to mind) where the runback to the boss is an absolute nightmare. And once you've explored the level and the only thing left to do is fight the boss, having to do all that runback is just a chore. Thankfully they fixed that in later games...

@hk yup. No regrets on my end. I really enjoyed the 5-6 hours I put into it, but I just can't commit to spending that much of my limited time getting pissed off at something that's rather....I dunno, redundant.

I want to get to the boss. I don't want to fight and run for two minutes to have to do so.

@danielholt @hk That’s the worst aspect of these soul-likes. Lies of P is also quite terrible in this regard, especially with these two-phases bosses where you have to restart from the beginning after each attempt. Thankfully the game is good enough, so I managed to finish it. Can’t say the same of all From Software games, the only positive exception being Bloodborne.

@anubisvladtepas @danielholt Yeah but Lies of P does two things really well:

1) Theres always a stargazer close enough to the fog wall so that the runback is not terrible (I think the worst offender was the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, where you had to first go through a building crawling with enemies, and it wasn't too bad anyway) and

2) When you die the Ergo is dropped outside the boss arena, not inside it as in FromSoft games. The most annoying thing in FromSoft titles is when there's a multi-phase boss where the arena changes for the second phase, and the souls/runes are in that second arena. I especially hated it on the final boss of base Elden Ring.

@hk .....

I redownload it. I'm not sure why. I also downloaded Dark Souls III and OG The Surge....

Help me.

@danielholt 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Because maybe you feel like giving it another chance?

DS3 is really good, I ranked it top of the three games for a reason 😁
