Huh, so Astro Bot got a 10/10 from EDGE magazine. :huh:
A publication I personally view as one of the most critical publications out there, bothering on the cynical even.

Yet they don't thing the game is a "Isn't A Celebration, It's A Graveyard" like that terrible "the gamer" site.
Nor do they mention that it's a "Soulless Devotion To The Sony Brand" and how that's a problem like clickbaitTAKU did.

Perhaps there's still hope for games journalism... 👀

@OutofPrintArchive Aren't EGDE known for lying and taking paid reviews?

@pforpond
I don't think so.
At least, not that I'm aware of at least?

But those kinds of things get thrown out there a lot when games get praised that certain people for whatever reason can't deal with as a way to ruin the credibility of the source.

Could it be that you're thinking of Driv3rgate?
As Future publishing took the money to hype up Driver 3 from Atari, but the magazines in question were XBOX World and PSM2.

EDGE gave the game like a 3 I believe.

@OutofPrintArchive I was thinking of Driv3rgate, thanks for reminding me what put me off them! It's been a long time since then, I should probably just get over it, looks like they've been good since then. (10/10 for Skyward Sword is a real WTF moment tho, I consider that game unplayable.)

@pforpond
There's so much screwy things that happen in this industry, it's impossible to keep up with it all or to keep them apart even.

I actually, unironically love Skyward Sword. 😅

The start is really annoying though and too long before it picks up, but the dungeons are some of my favourite in the series.
I love how interconnected they are and not a bunch of separated rooms like normally.

The overworked has a couple of issues though.
Oh and I adore the graphical style. 😊

@OutofPrintArchive It looks like a terrific game! I'm a huge Zelda fan. Sadly I could never work the controls correctly, even in the Switch remaster with the 'fixed' controls. To this day I've never gotten past the first dungeon.

@pforpond

Ah that's. real shame.
I'm lucky that motion controls never bothered me, in fact, I loved them.
Sometimes a bit finicky and imprecise but overall, so much fun.

ExciteBots, Elebits, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Kororinpa, all of them felt so great to me.

@OutofPrintArchive Wow, only their 27th 10 in 31 years and 400+ issues.

@retrohistories

Indeed. They don't dish these out easily.

@OutofPrintArchive I've wondered if it's the scarcest honour in game journalism. Famitsu have given out more 40s than Edge have 10s. But there's probably some international magazine or long running website that beats it.

@retrohistories

Never thought about it actually, but that would certainly make a very interesting statistic.

The one I'm thinking of would be CVG since they had the 5/5 rating scale during the Paul Davies era and that was used quite a lot.
And it's one of the longest running magazines ever.

Famitsu has about 7 years on EDGE I believe and they were bi-weekly before they went weekly, so a ton more issues released overall as well. So that makes sense.

@OutofPrintArchive Possibly not so on the day they close two of their sister magazines :D

@yesterzine
What’s even left at this point anymore?
I still can’t believe we don’t have an official Nintendo magazine anywhere.

I didn’t even realise that there was an actual PlayStation magazine still.

What a world…

@OutofPrintArchive Now there isn’t so that’s solved. They were also the last official magazine until 30 months ago. Left in uk mainstream print is just Edge, Retro Gamer and PC Gamer.

@OutofPrintArchive but also Switch Player (semi regular), Crash, Zzap, Zzap Amiga, Amiga Addict and Pixel Addict,

@yesterzine oh yeah, I have a subscription to Switch Player.

Nintendo Force should be coming back as well although I have no details about that.

@OutofPrintArchive @yesterzine did Nintendo Force go away? I’ve been subscribed to that since issue one and still am.

@Rand__alThor @yesterzine
Oh wait. I switched the two around.
The US one is still going.
It’s the UK indie Nintendo mag that stopped at issue 69 if I’m not mistaken.
But the editor sent out a message last month that they would be returning and to wait for more details.

@yesterzine @OutofPrintArchive My money's on PC Gamer being next to go, and Retro Gamer being the last one standing.

@retrohistories @yesterzine I have no idea how PC Gamer is doing, but if Retro Gamer gets shut down, this whole thing is just one big farce. 😒

@OutofPrintArchive @retrohistories @yesterzine another of the publishers I work for just shuttered another mag, Reed Pop did its shitty thing, and Future UK recently sold all our freelance contracts to its US division without notice. Several editors are either gone or ghosting me.

I gather PC Gamer is still doing okay, but honestly the current ad sales models aren't sustainable, IMO.

Retro Gamer's still indie, isn't it?

@HauntedOwlbear @OutofPrintArchive @retrohistories Retro Gamer has never really been indie but they’ve shared a publisher with edge for a long time now so no.

@retrohistories @OutofPrintArchive PC gamer are still proudly publishing a six year old circulation figure that’s lower than Amiga power closed on. But they’re cheap because most of it is website reprints
