Some of the open world features that are new in #diablo4 remind me a lot of Ragnarok Online, an MMO that predated WoW and, when it came out, felt like Diablo 2 in a shared, open world.
RO had no real quests, pure grind, but players created their own events or just fooled around more. No general world chat meant that players / guilds hung out in certain spots, etc.
Perhaps due to limitations like these, it felt more like an "online society" than any later game I know.
