I wonder if / when #litrpg ever goes mainstream. It’s at the point where people are discovering it, posting about it, and the comments are saying “omg I’m glad more people are talking about it.
#writersofmastadon tread carefully into that subgenre though. The production cycle has a pretty low bar to entry and it’s hyper concentrated to mostly #royalroad so it’s getting pretty saturated.
But I mean if #writing was easy everyone would do it.
@wayneloche tbh, I don't get litrpg. It's not written like someone is playing a video game, but there's no explanation as to why they can all look at their stat sheets either...? At least from what I saw. Are we supposed to brush that aside?
Also, isn't it the opposite of "show, don't tell"? Like, they can write "then appeared a lv 99 Wizard!" and we'll know he's super powerful, but it doesn't seem very engaging unless they also show that somehow... at which point, why even mention the lvl?
@spinning_bird I mean we only brush it aside as much as we brush aside that Gandalf can do magic right, or that Star Trek has a teleporting machine. I know it *feels* like telling, but it really is showing. Telling is "then appeared a powerful wizard".
Again, there's some more eloquent ways of showing and the genre isn't for everyone.
@wayneloche what I mean is, do they ever bring up the fact that they have "stats" or is that rooted in any in-universe explanation, like the gods gave it to them? Because Gandalfs magic as well as Star Treks teleporters have some backgrounds, but I didn't find anything similar with the litrpg things (although admittedly I haven't read a lot of it)
@spinning_bird The stats are the background. Typically an litrpg books refer to it as the "System". I think Dungeon Crawler Carl is a good example. Basically aliens come with super advanced tech and terra form earth into a dungeon. Then it's broadcasted across the universe for entertainment. Last man standing wins etc etc.
The "system" is why stats exist. Think of it like hard magic system. You have raw data on how the magic system works.
